Most often, we will be offered Ylang Ylang \"Extra\", 1, 2, and Ylang Ylang 3. These are all fractions of the distillation, each separated from the rest consecutively as the distillation progresses. Ylang Ylang Extra is from the first distillate to come over and Ylang Ylang 3 from the last.\u003cbr\u003eYlang Ylang Complete contains them all and is the collected essential oil produced from one long distillation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe fragrance of this Ylang Ylang Complete essential oil can be described as heady, sensuous, full-bodied, (and inebriating). It is sweet without being cloying and has soft, honey floral notes woven with caramel and delicate spices. As it dries down, it reminds me of forest moss and fresh ocean breezes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany essential oils on the market are manufactured in large distillation plants located in Western countries. The raw materials are often purchased from middlemen at the lowest possible price in poorer, less developed countries, and the profit from processing the aromatic materials is distributed in the developed countries. The harvesters, growers and their communities see very little of the high prices we pay for these products.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDistilling essential oils locally adds value to raw materials and allows more of the money we pay for finished products to stay in the pockets of communities that are often underdeveloped. It assures everyone who contributes to our natural aromatics and medicinals can get a fair share of the money we in the West pay for these valuable products.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the case of delicate flowers that cannot be grown in developed countries or shipped to foreign distilleries, international concerns will sometimes set up and operate their own distillation facilities and even purchase land, grow the aromatics, and distil them locally. This benefits the local economy to a small degree with employment opportunities but mainly benefits the international corporations, allowing them to keep the lion's share of the profits for themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI believe that by supporting these artisans and small-batch local distillers, we, as consumers, contribute one more small piece towards a picture of international fair trade, care, and respect, both for the land and the communities that look to it for sustenance. Not only does this keep more of the profit in their communities, but artisan distillers are often more focused on quality and not quantity as in industrial distillation plants.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe social movement of buying local and supporting artisans and small businesses is slowly replacing our reliance on faceless corporations that bear no social or environmental responsibility and focus exclusively on their profit margin.\u003cbr\u003eI would also mention even though artisan distillers can not often afford laboratory screenings for their small batch essential oils, they are also not in the position to adulterate their products with cheaper aroma chemicals. It lacks the sharp edge one usually finds in commercial distillations of Frankincense Carterii. It is both relaxing and stimulating at the same time and a perfect product for aromatherapy, facial toners and other products.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a PURE \u0026amp; UNADULTERATED hydro distilled essential oil distilled by me in small batches. Nothing is added to it and nothing was taken from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrankincense has been in the news regularly the past few years, due to the Boswellic acids found in the heavy resin portion of this oleo gum resin. Studies have shown these resin compounds cause apoptosis in various types of cancer cells without harming healthy cells. This is one of 3 types of Frankincense that are known to contain these compounds. Other than the scent, it seems identical to the Kenyan variety. It is a pure oleoresin with no water-soluble gum which means it melts cleanly into the charcoal as incense, and just as readily, dissolves into warm oils and waxes for the production of moustache waxes, oils, salves and cremes. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes in Northern Kenya I would still be sceptical.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe initial injury to the tree generates a clear oleoresin that hardens translucent and light golden. (The Thurimel). Subsequently, the tree creates traumatic resin ducts as do our Northern Spruce and Pines. These ducts generate a therapeutic compound called \"Callus Resin\" that acts as a bandage and promotes the growth of protective tissue that heals the wounds, creates \"scar tissue\" and isolates healthy tissue from diseased. I assume, that the presence of different chemical compounds lends a different fragrance profile to each of these oleoresins. (Which may be a contributing factor to the bits of bark mixed in with the resin). \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs semi-nomadic pastoralists herd their animals through the dry desert Savannah, they visit each tree for a few minutes and collect whatever resin they can find. They create lumps in the palm of their hand that slowly grow in size from tree to tree. The lumps are eventually added together and sold or traded in small village markets where they purchase or barter for food and supplies.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNative to East Africa, the Black Mastic tree is not tapped or harmed to collect the resin. it is a natural exudate that forms in the dry season after the rains have stopped. This resin is very similar in consistency to Frankincense Neglecta and Kenyan Frankincense and is, as far as I can tell, may be a result of interactions between longhorn beetle larvae and the trees. This means the resin is not produced due to tapping or damaging the tree, making it a sustainable product.
