Description
Once called Black Boy, this is the the natural exudate of the Australian Grass tree Xanthorrhoea spp.
The resin accumulates naturally and is collected by Aboriginal people without harming the tree.
This shipment is harvested legally and sustainably.
Aboriginal use- (Wikipedia).
The resin from Xanthorrhoea plants is used in spear-making[11] and is an invaluable adhesive for Aboriginal people, often used to patch up leaky coolamons (water containers) and even yidaki (didgeridoos). The dried flower stalk scape was also used to generate fire by the hand drill friction method.
Resin collected from the plant was used in Australia until the mid-twentieth century for the following purposes:[12]
Burnt as an incense in churches.
A base component for a varnish used on furniture and in dwellings.
A polish and a coating used on metal surfaces including stoves, tin cans used for storing meat and “brass instruments.”
A component used in industrial process associated with “sizing paper, in soap making, perfumery and in manufacturing early gramophone records.”
Grass tree resin has a beautiful aroma as incense. It is reminiscent of Dragonsbood resin, but softer sweeter, and more complex. I find it is not hard on the lungs or harsh as Dragonsblood can be, and its fragrance is much more pleasing to my nose.
As mentioned, in the past it was used in perfumery so one wonders what it could add to modern perfumes as a tincture or essential oil.
It dissolves readily in alcohol producing an aromatic tincture that is bright garnet red.
Larger specimens can be purchased. Conact me for photos and prices.

Peculiar, almost disturbing aroma of an unknown to me resin. Always happy to discover something like this! Exotic, pungent and mineral. Smells like it needs to be used in magical spells – incense blends for invoking certain energies (or warding off evil ones). Very neat and curious material for those passionate about burning incense and incense making.

At first the scent took a bit to grow on me, but I've come to very much appreciate this unique resin. It goes great in blends with more prominent top notes, like frankincense or copal blanco. Kudos to Apothecary's Garden for sourcing the most diverse products Mother Earth has to offer!

It powders nicely, tints a very deep red/magenta. But it has a very faint smell. Not really interesting for perfumers…

Very peculiar scent! However, I love trying new things and this was very interesting! Ordered 10 grams, and I think I got only 6.5 grams. Not sure though, my scale might be off.

Wonderful resin! Smooth, sweet, complex, slightly milky. Just an excellent scent when burned as incense, even on a raw coal. Be aware that the "amount" is in grams, not portions of an ounce, so you may receive less than you were expecting if you don't pay attention.
Great resin, excellent vendor who promotes ethical production, harvesting, and sale whenever possible. Dan is my first choice for exotic resins.

Another new one for me. It is crystalline and as red as the dragon's blood. The scent is light, a little bit like cedarwood. I've yet to burn it, so I cannot speak to that. It is very pretty visually. Shipped quickly and arrived on time. Thank you!

It's a wonderful scent reminiscent of pure castoreum and ortario black propolis from ApothecarysGarden.I didn't know if this resin also releaves its fragrance only when heated or not. But since I didn't receive a particularly strong essence while inhaling the stone itself, I grinded the 10g resin and warm it up in a covered glass jar in my Bain Marie. After having it completely meIted , I opened up the cover, added 40ml food grade ethanol and closed the cover asap (this time didnt locked up to keep the internal pressure atmospheric) Each 5 minutes I swayed the jar after 15 minutes I turned it off, When it got to room temperature I saw 1/3 of it remained undissolved
But the rest is completely penetrated with color and wonderful scent into the ethanol.Thank you Dan and the entire ApothecarysGarden Team

What a beautiful surprise!!!!! Tinctured this the second I opened the bag. Garnet red juice that smells amazing even on day three!!!! The fragrance is weirdly floral and lingers on my scent strip for days. The drydown is a rare exotic perfume. It's really very interesting! This will be a permanent resident in my perfume organ! I burned a little too and oh my!!! An incense will be fantastic!!!
