Pine Rosin

Rosin is the pure resin collected after the dry distillation of Pine pitch. It is used in myriad applications across industries and cultures, and has been in use for thousands of years.

In this type of distillation, the fresh pitch/resin is placed in a sealed metal still, and high temperature (over 300 degrees Celsius) is applied. All the volatile essential oil evaporates and is collected (We sometimes call this essential oil Turpentine), and what is left in the still is pure resin, which we call Rosin. While hot and liquid, the Rosin is filtered through cloth or cotton to remove any needles and foreign material.

It is then poured into pans, where it forms a brittle, amber-coloured, glass-like product with little to no aroma.

Rosin is used in a broad range of applications. It helps create the friction that produces sound from the strings of violins, cellos, and other stringed instruments. It is used to enhance the grip of wrestlers, gymnasts, baseball pitchers, and dancers. Rosin is used in the production of adhesives, paints, and surface coatings and many more useful items.

Rosin dissolves in alcohol and essential oils (Think Turpentine), as well as in warm vegetable carrier oils. For this reason, it is frequently used in the modern Artisanal production of BeesWax wraps.

Rosin is an excellent base for making moustache waxes and other grooming products, as it provides body, tack (stickiness), and a perming effect on facial hair. It has the extra benefit of adding no aroma of its own to a formula.

Pine Rosin can be used in muscle and joint rubs. Though it lacks its natural essential oils, the resin acids that make up rosin are active and are considered anti-inflammatory.

It is lovely as an incense material.

Pine Rosin is a popular ingredient in homemade natural chewing gum, where it is traditionally blended with Beeswax for cohesion and flexibility.

If you want to use this Rosin to make your own Beeswax wraps, you will find many excellent formulas online published by talented artisans around the world.

If you do make your own products with Rosin, remember to take clear notes! Your future self will thank you
