How long does the scent last when applied?
Many reviewers describe it as long-lasting and complex-smelling. The product description notes that it lingers through a long delicious dry-down and acts as a fixative in perfume blends, extending the longevity of fragrances. Several customers report wearing it daily on their wrists with satisfaction.
What does the tonka bean extract smell like?
Reviewers consistently describe it as sweet, warm, and intoxicating with complex notes. Common descriptors include vanilla, honey, hay, almonds, and spices with a subtle bitterness. The product description notes scents of new-mown hay, marzipan, vanilla, tobacco, and caramel. One reviewer found it more bitter than sweet, so scent perception varies individually.
Can I use this as a personal fragrance?
Yes. The product description states it can be applied to skin directly as a personal perfume, and multiple reviewers mention wearing it daily on their wrists. Several note they receive compliments when wearing it.
How much do I need to use?
A reviewer notes you do not need a lot, so it goes a long way. This is consistent with the product being used as a fixative and fragrance component in blends and personal wear.
Can I mix this with other fragrances?
Yes. The product description states it blends well with and compliments most other aromatic materials. A reviewer successfully used it in a Fougere oil blend, where it thinned the blend and helped materials bind together better.
Is this safe to use on skin?
The product is designed for use as a personal fragrance applied directly to skin, and reviewers apply it to their wrists regularly. However, the product description notes that tonka beans have been banned as a food additive in the USA due to coumarin content, though it states international consensus is that adverse effects are negligible unless consumed in significant quantities. It is an alcohol-based extract for fragrance use.
How is this extract made?
The product description states this batch was made at a ratio of 1 part powdered tonka beans to 2 parts 95% alcohol and macerated with warmth for four months.
How does this compare to artificial tonka scent?
A reviewer states this smells 100% better than artificial tonka bean, indicating the natural extract is noticeably superior in authenticity and quality.
Sweet, dry, and rich with a delicate spiciness, this extract delivers the scent of new-mown hay, Marzipan (Bitter Almond), Vanilla, tobacco and Caramel with tenacity and determination.

Tonka bean and its extracts find extensive use in gourmand food preparation, as flavouring agents in tobacco products and are popular ingredients in both mainstream and artisan perfumery. Tonka has also seen a relatively modern use as an incense ingredient.

The Tonka Bean extract can be applied to the skin directly as a personal perfume and lingers through a long delicious dry-down, projecting itself seductively. Like Vanilla, Tonka is often used as an ingredient in Amber accords and as a fixative in perfume compositions. It blends well with and compliments most other aromatic materials and extends the longevity of perfume blends by anchoring more fleeting notes.

I produced this batch at a ratio of 1 part powdered Tonka beans to 2 parts 95% alcohol and macerated it with warmth for four months. It is a gorgeous representation of the magic and allure of Tonka.

Though Tonka beans have been banned as a food additive in the USA for decades due to their Coumarin content, internationally, it is accepted that unless consumed in significant quantities, there is a negligible risk of adverse effects from the Coumarin contained in the beans. Coumarin is the base material from which the blood thinner Coumadin was synthesized initially.

Tonka Beans are used in Western magical traditions when creating spells, charms and philtres to attract love, money, sex and prosperity. It does make sense that anything that smells so good you must go back for a deeper inhalation is a perfect symbolic attractant. And you will indeed return to inhale this Tonka extract’s heavenly aroma. Over and over.

An Absolute can be made from Tonka Bean extract by evaporating the alcohol gently in a shallow dish, covered with a cloth for a few days. This is best done somewhere warmish with good air circulation, like the top of the fridge.

Such a warm and sweet fragrance...

It's my second purchase of this wonderful extract... I have a bit of difficulty to put into words its complexity. Smooth, sweet, "vanillic"... balsamic with nut and spices... Sensuous to say the least. Thank you again, Dan & team!

The tonka bean extract arrived earlier this morning, put it to work in the traditional Fougere oil blend I had started on (waited until it came in to finalize it), and there it is! It thinned out the blend, and as a bonus: alcohol based extract, it has helped the materials bind together much better. It is now complete. I thank you for offering this beautiful material to us, and look forward to using it with everything now. It arrived safely and everything is intact! Always a pleasure doing business with Dan!
