Deer Musk is, and always has been a commodity of great magic, mystery and rarity. One finds references to deer musk that date back thousands of years, and it is mentioned in writings on traditional medicine, magic, and the occult.
Deer musk is ruled by the planet Mars in traditional and Ayurvedic Astrology, often portrayed as a potent aphrodisiac that sparks our imagination and our desire to seek it out.
Though the material is commonly called Deer Musk Grains, it is more of a thick, dry, crumbly paste with bits of gland lining and hairs from the pod's fur. You will note the consistency of the freshly opened pod in the photo above. This is a gland that produces a unique material, and you will also find a bit of the gland mixed in.
I spent a fortune over the decades searching for authentic, high-quality, unadulterated Deer Musk. This journey was a great education for me, and now I can gauge the veracity or the quality of a few grains with a glance and a sniff. But, as mentioned, it was a long and difficult road full of deception and sleight of hand.
You can make a tincture by macerating 1 Gram of Deer musk grains in 9-10 grams of alcohol or an "Attar", by replacing the alcohol with Sandalwood essential oil.
The tincture should be left to macerate for at least 6 months before decanting. The aroma will develop and evolve over time.
The tincture can be diluted and sprayed into dry incense blends or dough, and used in minute amounts to transform a perfume blend.
Traditional medicine has a lot to say about deer musk, and you will find it in many formulas.
