Galbanum is also found as an ingredient in Egyptian Kyphi formulas.

Galbanum leaves, root, and resin have been used in traditional medicine for centuries, while the leaves are used fresh as a condiment, much like Angelica.

The odour profile of Galbanum is amber, sweet, and balsamic, with fresh green notes. It is one of a few natural green base notes.

Galbanum resin has a unique green/earthy aroma on the coal and the essential oil has a rare complex dry perfume to it with hints of green.

The family name Ferula refers to the sheath-like sleeve that clasps the hollow stems of most members of this family of perennial herbs—a term we still use today, ferrule.

Other members of the Ferula family include Ammoniacum, Asafoetida, Sumbul, (Muskroot), Giant Fennel and Ferula Hermonis, also known as Zallouh or Lebanese Viagra.

How to germinate Galbanum seeds

  • Biologist Lennard Pisa has been experimenting with growing plants from these seeds. His suggestion is-
  • "Chill for 3 to 6 weeks at 5°c. Ferula Asafoetida, Gummosa, and Foetida take an average of a month to germinate; Dorema takes longer. Not all seeds sprout at the same time; some take 3 weeks, and some take 5. Ferula is close to Angelica taxonomically. Technically, it is a monocarpic perennial; the plants live for 3-5 years and then flower, after which they die."

  • The nominal temperature of most domestic refrigerators is 5 degrees Celsius.Which makes them perfect for seed stratification.

  • After stratification, plant your seeds in deep pots or directly in the soil at a depth of 1 centimetre and water them in.

  • Galbanum seeds send down long tap roots, so if  first sowing them in pots, make sure the roots have enough room to develop and won't be disturbed too much when planting out.

  • There are approximately 300 seeds in a 1/2 Ounce packet; which is 15 Grams. I am not sure of the germination rate, so having more than you need is always a good idea.
