Musk Root Essential oil-Rare!!
Rare!!-Musk Root essential oil has herbaceous powdery green and sweet golden notes; I can almost smell the dry limestone hills, the last of the wildflowers, and Musk root seeds rattling on tall stalks in the autumn wind.

Musk Root essential oil is beautifully intense and conveys the unique character, and dry musk notes that only Musk Root has.
Also called Sumbul, Sumbal and Ferula Sumbul, Musk root was used in the 1800s by the Russians as a botanical replacement for Deer Musk.
Not only is Musk Root essential oil is a fixative in perfumes, lending tenacity and longevity to fleeting top notes, but it pulls together an aromatic composition, enlivens it and adds a whole other dimension to perfumes in much the same way as the traditional Animalics in the shop.
This distillation was done with the resin collected from the plant's roots, which has more of an earthy aroma than the resin collected from the stems.
This collection method is sustainable and does not harm the plants or reduce the plant population in the wild.
In the fall, after the plant has released its seeds, the roots are carefully exposed to the air. The top layer is scraped in 1-inch patches. The harvesters return after a week or two and collect the fresh resin that has accumulated on the wound. It is put in small containers and taken to a central location where all the small batches of resin are combined in larger containers before being shipped to the big cities and sold to suppliers.
Energetically, the Ferula family is ruled by the wind and Mercury.
Musk Root is still an incense and traditional medicine ingredient in the East.

I was pulled backward through time, back to the earliest days of my perfumery journey, when every raw material felt like a door into another world. There's something encapsulating about Musk Root, something that smells less like an ingredient and more like a memory.
Straight from the bottle, Musk Root opens with a vivid green profile, and inside that green is a whole ecosystem. Galbanum rises first, sharp and sappy and alive, followed by the dry tartness of lime and a bright flicker of bergamot. There are even hints of fruity apple in there, a juicy sweetness peeking through the greenery like fruit hidden in the leaves. Above it all sit airy, resinous pine notes, like sunlight filtering through the top of a canopy. Hints of petitgrain weave through, that bitter-leaf twist of snapped citrus branches, and as it begins to dry down, a soft, clean soapiness settles in, like moss washed by last night's rain.
Then the material deepens, and this is where it stops being a scent and starts being a place. Pepperiness emerges, then tree bark, rough and honest, and beneath it something smoother: a wood I can only describe as fantasy cedarwood, the kind of tree that grows in stories rather than soil. And everywhere, that remarkable dryness that is Sumbul's signature. This is the forest floor in morning summer sun, warm earth exhaling, with faint tonalities of true deer musk drifting underneath like something ancient drifting between the trees...
It's easy to understand why 19th-century Russian perfumers reached for this root when deer musk grew scarce. The animal is in there, quiet and botanical, but unmistakable. It's not super bitter like mugwort can be, but it strikes a fine balance between shiny and bitter (green notes)
This material is absolutely stunning, and it's a shapeshifter. Because of its scent profile, I can see Musk Root anchoring virtually any forest composition, either as a fixative giving longevity to fleeting top notes or as the soul of the blend itself, pulling everything together the way the great animalics do. Sea blends would work magnificently as well, heck I'd even reckon a Desert themed perfume would magnify the dryness aspect.
One warning to fellow perfumers: smell it at 10% dilution. At full strength it will simply overwhelm you. This oil will overwhelm you due to its potential!

So cool. Way sharper and greener. More aggressive than its absolute counterpart. Hostile, even! This is what I expected from galbanum, but mine is an absolute, not an oil, so who knows? Maybe its eo is even angrier than this here ferula sambuca. One can only speculate, for now. Very exciting stuff. I am into exploring as many green notes and woody or resinous bases as I can afford to get my hands on.

Two twins that can make together surprising results.
The EO of Musk Root is significantly drier than Absolute, influencing mainly higher tones, often with very interesting twist. Absolute adds more warm velvet musk tones. These two make marvelous twins adding musk, animalic and fixation to composition. Not only can you balance longevity and tenacity using them in suitable ratio, they can also harmonize the composition as well.
Great addings to perfumerʼs palette from Danʼs (Apothecaryʼs) garden. Thatʼs why I come back to this shop again and again.

This is an intriguing scent and my first experience with it. As someone else has mentioned in the reviews, there's initial green notes similar to Galbanum and Angelica Root, or a bit like carrots steaming on the stove or even dirty potatoes! Then it dries down to a musky, earthy, slightly floral scent. Very unique and beautiful.

Upon opening the bottle and taking my first sniff I certainly had the musk smell and then it melted down into a very complex scent with the last bit seeming very clean and floral. Almost a soft clear pine. I don't know how to use it yet but will most likely use it for meditation.

Highly aromatic upon opening similar to rosemary or cardamom seeds. Quickly dries down to an organic forest floor of herb roots and pine like. Lovely and unique. Absorbs quickly on the skin and the taste is pungent and earthy. This is how my corona virus damaged nose and tongue receives this distillation. I am trying very hard to retrain my nose to get back what was virally damaged. I hope this description is accurate, not distorted. Arrived quickly and protected from breakage.

Wunderbarer grüner Duft. Irgendwo bei Galbanum und Angelikawurzel, finde ich, aber trotzdem ganz eigen. Die Animalik muss sich mir erst noch erschließen.
