Frequently asked questions

Some questions and answers are automatically generated.

How does this extract smell?
Reviewers describe a complex scent with caramel, vanilla, amber, and sweet woody notes. One customer noted it transforms from caramel candy in the bottle to cherry cola when worn, and another found it reminiscent of frankincense. The overall character is warm, sweet, and dry, though some detect a subtle boozy quality with sharper spice undertones.
Can I wear it as a personal fragrance?
Yes. One verified customer reports wearing it on its own and finding it compelling enough that they can't wait to blend it further. Many reviewers describe using it as a perfume ingredient and mixing it with other notes, but at least one customer's experience confirms it works standalone as well.
Is this better than the raw bark form?
A reviewer who has used both the raw bark and extract forms notes that the extract is "just like a perfume," suggesting it's more refined and easier to work with than burning the raw material. The extraction process separates the aromatic resin from the waxy base, creating a cleaner product for blending.
How well does it blend with other scents?
Reviewers consistently praise its blending ability. One customer describes it as an "essential component to many of my personal blends," and another successfully combined it with guggul, vanilla, and cistus to create a rich amber. It pairs well with amber accords, florals, and incense compositions according to customer experience.
What is the alcohol content?
This extract is made with 95% food-grade ethanol (190 proof alcohol), as stated in the product description. It is produced by macerating powdered bark in alcohol at a 1:3 ratio for 8 weeks.
Can I make an absolute from this extract?
Yes. According to the product description, an Absolute can be made by evaporating the alcohol gently in a shallow dish and covering it with a cloth for a few days, which will leave behind the concentrated aromatic resin.
Is this sustainably sourced?
According to the seller, the product is sustainably sourced, with only fallen bark pieces collected from the Sarcocaulon mossamedense plant in Namibia and Southern Angola. No plant harvesting or damage is involved.

Bushman's Candle extract has a unique, pleasing, dry, sweet Amber/ Caramel scent that finds use in perfume formulas and Amber accords. It can be easily blended into incense compositions and lacks the burnt wax scent that the powdered bark delivers on the coal.

Bushman's Candle is the fallen bark from the desert succulent Sarcocaulon mossamedense, a member of the Geraniaceae family found in Namibia and Southern Angola where it grows in mainly coastal areas in grit with little water and lots of sun.

When a part of the plant dies, the soft interior decomposes over time leaving behind fragrant hollow sleeves of bark.

The bark is made of a waxy resinous material that weathers the harsh desert climate for many years.
The Himba tribe of Namibia traditionally uses the bark to add a unique aroma to the wild game that is smoked over the fire.

The bark will ignite and stay lit much like a candle which gives this material its colloquial name.

Bushman's candle can be powdered and used directly in incense blends though it is more common to make an alcohol tincture of the powdered bark, which separates the aromatic resin from the waxy base.

Bushman's candle has a beautiful Amber scent that is rich, sweet, warm, woody and tenacious.
It bolsters and deepens Amber accords and finds its way into all types of perfume.

My Namibian supplier assures me this product is sustainably sourced and only fallen pieces are collected.

Dan

Caramel candy and cherry cola

Out of the bottle it’s like caramel candy but when I put it on it transforms into cherry cola. I would wear it on its own. I can’t wait to play around with some cola scents.

Nice

I bought Bushman's Candle in raw bark form before. But the extract version is just like a perfume.
It can be a nice combination with amber notes.
