Pom Copal is scraped off the trees and wrapped in leaves to form packages of about a pound, (1/2 Kilo), each. See the photos above.

It will dissolve easily in warm oils. The best way to do this is in a water bath, double boiler, also called a Bain Marie. Do not heat resins directly on a flame or element. Not only can they char, but they are extremely flammable. Always use a water bath when heating resins.

The fragrance of Pom Copal is quite unique. It has a fresh green, fruity/citrus aroma layered with amber on top of an unusual funky musky base note.

It is more similar to Madagascar Elemi than any other resin I have smelled and is indeed a relative. Both Elemi, Protium Copal, Frankincense and Myrrh belong to the Burseraceae family also known as the incense tree family.

In some cultures, Protium Copal is used to bind other aromatics such as Cedar leaves and aromatics woods, fragrant herbs and resins. These are formed into balls and given as offerings on the hot coals of the fire. These aromatic balls are also sometimes called "Pom".

Pom Copal makes a sweet, energetically cleansing and uplifting incense.

As with all fresh and sticky resins we sell, I suggest placing the package of resin in the fridge or freezer for a half-hour before attempting to remove the resin from the plastic wrapper. It will then separate easily and allow you to collect every little precious bit of resin.

Authentic Protium Copal

A beautiful glob of sappy, semi-firm resin with twigs and leaves naturally mixed throughout. Right out of the package, this copal from Guatemala has a bright, piney-lemon aroma up front, with deep, organic base notes reminiscent of a wet jungle. Once on the charcoal, the aroma changes to produce mainly the wet jungle smell with culinary sage-like notes. Very curious. A little goes a long way. Although I'll be using this very sparingly in my incense rituals, I am delighted with the product.

Intoxicating Aroma as Incense

I tired a small piece of this in my electric incense warmer and it was just fabulous - full of rich, toasty aroma - a bit woodsy but still resinous. Love it! I am a fan.

Still waiting

I ordered the Pom and Mexican Copal weeks ago but because of the postal strike I have yet to receive anything. I followed up with a note the day after ordering asking about alternative delivery. I unfortunately never heard anything back. I'm not sure if the website mentions the ongoing postal strike but it may have been helpful to see that before purchasing, as I live in the area. Still eager to receive my package whenever that may be.

'Arrived timely, and was very well packaged. I must say that I was a little surprised (but not disappointed) at how soft it was. The "Pom" in the description clearly stands for "pomade". This was my first time ordering this resin, and, so, I didn't know any better. My guess is that it will be all the easier to mix with other ingredients to create a lovely blend.
