Boswellia, or Frankincense Serrata, is likely one of the world's most well-known and most-used types of Frankincense. Also called Indian Olibanum and Salai in India, its traditional medicinal uses are well recorded.
Growing from India up through Punjab and into Pakistan, Frankincense Serrata resin is the classic Indian Frankincense used extensively in incense making and many types of Traditional medicine, especially Ayurveda where it is known as Salai and Shallaki in Sanskrit. It is thought to aid in meditation, elevate the mood, heighten feelings of spirituality and well-being, and is used extensively in local rituals, ceremonies, and holy days.
Frankincense Serrata essential oil is used in perfumery and aromatherapy, bringing its sweet spiciness to a broad range of formulations.
Boswellia Serrata has been in the spotlight recently for its therapeutic compounds, the Boswellic acids. (Boswellic acids are not found in the essential oil of any Boswellia species, only in the whole oleo-gum-resin or a solvent extract.)
As all Frankincense types, B. Serrata is ruled Astrologically by the Sun and thus is warming, nourishing and expansive to the mind, heart and spirit. Frankincense Serrata is traditionally believed to increase mental clarity, spirituality and promote a positive attitude and courage in the face of fear.
