Tolu Balsam Resin is tapped from the trunks of Myroxylon balsamum and other trees of the Myroxylon family, Tolu Balsam is found from Peru through Brazil and east to the West Indies.
Traditionally, Tolu Balsam is used as a fragrance ingredient, in cough syrups for its expectorant qualities and in skin care products where, like Benzoin, it helps with chapped, chafed and cracked skin, but also causes sensitization if overused.
Do not take this product internally and use it in moderation in formulas.
Since it Tolu Balsam Resin has the colour and consistency of BlackStrap Molasses it may be more useful in soaps, salves, cremes and medicated oils than in perfumes where the distilled essential oil may serve better.
Tolu Balsam dissolves readily in alcohol but needs to be blended with a little bit of Benzyl Benzoate or another intermediate before adding it to oil-based products.
